I believed what she wanted to express was that the memories of a city were affected mainly by travelers' moods. Interestingly, people tended to create the first impression of a place from indirect experiences like the words from other visitors or fictional works. With their expectations, travelers went to that city and built their knowledge at the crossroads of reality and imagination. Therefore, most either felt much disappointed or satisfied when imitating the perspectives of previous visitors. A city like Meniax was a flux. You would quickly lose it if attempting to hold it tightly, yet you could observe part of it when spreading your palms and let it expand naturally.
